Every text and webchat option is marked, so you can get help without saying a word out loud.

Worried about someone?

Most of these lines support friends, parents and carers too, you don't have to be the one struggling.

Learn more about getting help

Knowing what to expect can make it easier to reach out. Here is a quick guide to the different kinds of support you can find on HelpHub.

What happens when I call?

A trained listener or advisor will answer. You do not need to have the right words – you can start with 'I do not know what to say.' They are there to help, not judge.

Text and webchat support

Some people find it easier to type than talk. Text services and webchat are available for many of the organisations listed, often 24/7.

Is it confidential?

Helplines are confidential unless you or someone else is at immediate risk of serious harm. Most services will explain their confidentiality policy at the start of the call.

NHS talking therapies

If you live in England you can usually self-refer for free CBT, counselling or guided self-help through NHS Talking Therapies without seeing a GP first.

Support for friends and family

Many helplines welcome calls from people worried about a loved one. You can get advice on how to help someone else while looking after yourself.

When to call 999 or go to A&E

If life is at risk, someone has seriously harmed themselves, or you cannot keep yourself safe, call 999 or go to your nearest A&E emergency department.
